TW+Ready Certification · The Activator
Training changes people. It rarely changes the system they go back to.
The Activator is a 12–15 month certification for the person whose actual work is the system itself — the conditions, the scaffolding, and whether any of it survives them leaving.

Two ways people arrive here
The next stretch of this page is the only part that differs. Please read the side that is yours — and everything below it applies to both.
Community-rooted
Both — one program from here on
Sent by an organization
Your people were trained. Your system stayed the same.
You have sent staff to trauma-informed training before. They came back changed and the building did not. Caseloads, handovers, supervision, who gets heard in a meeting, what happens after an incident — none of it moved, so within a season neither did they.
What you are actually buying
Not a course for a member of staff. The practicum container is your organization, so your Activator produces six assessed pieces of work about your system, and a capstone — and you keep all of it.
Those are consulting deliverables, and they arrive as a by-product of certifying one of your people.
Who you would send
Not necessarily your most senior person. The one who can actually change how something is done, and who others already go to.
The seat is yours to buy. The place is theirs to earn. Every candidate applies and is interviewed, whoever is paying.
How it gets paid for
$4,000 per seat for the first cohort, with payment plans. Sending more than one person? Cohort pricing is set in conversation — it depends on how many seats and over how long.
Community-rooted
You have been doing this for years. It’s a role, not a job.
No job title gave you this. People come to you because of what you have done and who you have stayed with. You hold a neighborhood, a coalition, a congregation, a network — across organizations that do not report to one another, and over none of which you have any formal authority.
That is not the hard version of this role. It is the role.
An Activator tends what we call the Farm — work beyond any single institution, among people who may not report to one another. A director inside one organization is tending a Field. You are already standing where the whole curriculum points.
Same six assessed pieces of work, same capstone. What changes is what they point at:
What we ask of you
In an organization, permission is a senior sponsor signing something. Here it is a relationship — named partners, or a small group who agree to be worked with and who can say no and be heard.
You show that at interview, and you keep showing it through the practicum. It is a requirement of certifying, not a form at the door.
How it gets paid for
$4,000 for the first cohort. Most people in your position do not have that sitting in a budget line, and we would rather work on it with you than watch you quietly decide against it.
We have done grant-funded enrollment before. Please ask.
Both paths · one program from here on
One program. One cohort. Both of you in the same room, on purpose.
A program director and a neighborhood leader in the same monthly Lab is not a mixed-audience compromise — it is the curriculum. An Activator has to learn to move things where they hold no formal authority, and each of these two people already knows half of that. Everything below applies to both of you.
Cohorts and application windows
| Cohort | Applications | Window closes | Begins | Seat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 Cohort A | Open — read as they arrive | Saturday, March 20, 2027 | Monday, April 12, 2027 | $4,000 |
| 2027 Cohort B | Planned — not yet open | To be announced | To be announced | Above the first-cohort rate |
Applying early is better, not merely earlier. Applications are read as they arrive and acceptances are made before the window closes — and your access to Equip and the Discovery Series begins the day you are accepted. An acceptance in November is five months of material before the cohort even starts.
Cohort A is the first group to run, at a first-cohort rate that will not be offered again. Windows close on a Saturday on purpose — people doing the work that qualifies them for this rarely have a free Thursday.
What it asks of you
What it costs
$4,000 per seat · first cohort
A deliberate first-cohort rate for the group that helps finish the framework. Payment plans available.
Included from the day you are accepted, at no extra cost: TraumaWise Equip and the on-demand AAA Discovery Series, through the end of the program.
Who this is for, and what you need first
One requirement matters more than every other: a real container you can enter responsibly, and people in it who know you are doing this and want you to.
Everything you produce is about a living system — your organization, your neighborhood, your coalition. Without one you cannot do the work, and we would be asking a community to be practiced on. That is the line, and it is the same line on both paths.
TBRI training is not a paid product inside any TraumaWise certification package. It is arranged separately and carries its own cost and schedule.
How you get in
If an organization is paying: the seat is theirs to purchase and the place is yours to earn. Two conversations, with two different people, about two different things.
What you actually do
Seven phases. Each produces a real piece of work about the system you are in, assessed against eighteen competency areas, and all of it lands in a portfolio you keep.

If someone moves on
We ask about this because it has happened, and it is what we changed.
Staying certified, and staying connected
Certified Activators hold an Activator License, which keeps your access to the hubs, the materials, and the updates current and includes your Academy Membership for that year. For this first cohort it is $360 a year, beginning six months after you complete — fixed in your enrollment paperwork, and it does not move for you later. We will not know what running this actually costs until we have run it once, and you are not the ones who should carry that.
Membership is part of the license on purpose. This work is communal — online and in person — and an Activator who drifts off into a silo loses the thing that makes the role work. Staying in the room is not an add-on here; it is part of staying certified.
If you ever decide not to take the license, or not to renew it, Academy Membership continues on its own at $20 a month or $200 a year — so nobody who has done this work is shut out of the community over a renewal.
The license exists to hold fidelity and keep certified people current, not as a revenue engine. First cohorts have their terms written into their enrollment paperwork.
Where this comes from
The Advocate role — the material an Activator works through — began as the TBRI® Advocate Pilot Program, a specific, closed pilot for the TBRI Collaborative in California, launched by Renae and offered at that time through partnership with the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. Following the pilot, the program was adjusted and moved into a new framework within TraumaWise’s own curriculum, by agreement.
TraumaWise certifications are available worldwide and are not part of any partnership between TraumaWise and the KPICD. The certification you would be buying is TraumaWise’s own, start to finish.
What we can and cannot promise you
That pilot is why the seat policy above exists. We did not design it in the abstract — we watched what went wrong, and changed the thing that caused it.
What certifying lets you do
A certified Activator may present TraumaWise educational materials. Presenting the TBRI® Caregiver Package is reserved to TBRI Practitioners and KPICD partners, and no TraumaWise role carries it.
The Activator is one of four TraumaWise roles, and they are four distinct jobs rather than four rungs. You work through the Advocate material because you cannot deploy a role you have never stood in — not because it is a level below you.
The next step is a conversation
There is no cart. Whether you are sending someone or coming yourself, it starts with half an hour about what you are holding and whether this is the right thing for it.

Ten seats in Cohort A — that is the real capacity of a program this close-in, not a countdown. Applications are read as they arrive.
